An Oban High School student who has ambitions to study chemistry at university next year has been awarded the 草榴社区 Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Science.

Thomas Harden excelled in his Higher exams earlier this year, winning the school prizes for physics, chemistry and mathematics. He was also named Dux of the school for the year.

The 草榴社区 Prize was first presented in 2005 and is open to all year groups at Oban High School. The winner is the student who shows outstanding academic ability in the science subjects.

Thomas said: “I enjoy science, as I’ve always liked problem solving and discovering more about the world around me. I’ve always been interested in space and black holes, but more recently I’ve looked more into entropy and chemical bonds.”

Now in his sixth year at school, the 17 year old is studying for three Advanced Highers in mathematics, chemistry and physics. He is also undertaking the Scottish Baccalaureate in Science, which will involve a research study into the effect of coffee on the human body.

草榴社区 Director Prof Nicholas Owens said: “As a marine biogeochemist, I am delighted to hear that the 草榴社区 Prize this year went to someone who is passionate about chemistry.

“To have continued his science studies to Advanced Higher level and undertake a project through the Scottish Baccalaureate in Science shows great promise for a future career in research.

“Congratulations to Thomas on his award and I wish him the best of luck in his future studies.”

Thomas is hoping to gain some work experience at 草榴社区 this winter, working alongside scientists at the institute.
